Transport for the Community

blog post image

How important are the transport services within your community? To some they're vital but to others, who mostly use their own cars, have likely never given this any second thought. However, the real truth is that everyone relies on good sustainable transport services within their own communities, including car drivers. Whether it's going to school, a youth club activity, a seniors lunch club or commuting to work we all need a means of getting there. Without transport services in the community many more car-drivers would be faced with the extra pressure and expense to provide vital journeys for their own family members

It's not just transport services disappearing

Many communities are witnessing transport cuts through lack of local authority funding. These transport funding cuts are not just limited to bus services but also to schools, youth organisations and community transport. As a result many people are forced to rely on their own family members or give up travelling altogether. All this has a very negative impact on the whole community as people will consider moving to towns and cities with larger populations, more transport services and employment opportunities. As a result smaller communities with a decreasing population will see their communities slowly disappear through bus service cuts, failing businesses and school closures.

Making a stand

Many devoted local volunteers give up their free time to fight against bus service cuts or to provide other services like community transport. It can be a very lonely and arduous task trying to understand transport legislation, transport policies and getting your local authority to subsidise a community service, especially when they're under pressure to make drastic cuts of their own. However, connecting with other groups within your community could help you to independently source the necessary financial resources to sustain and retain local transport services. Shop local from You Me Community is a new initiative to help you overcome funding cuts to sustain transport services for members of the community through supporting local businesses and traders.

A unique and independent approach

Supporting local small businesses and traders could really make a big difference to help independently subsidise transport services. The more times the community shop local, the more financial support you will help to generate for schools, youth organisations and other groups to sustain and retain transport services for your community.
